About Me:
THE OBVIOUS: THIS IS AN UNOFFICIAL WEB PROFILE WHICH IS NOT FORMALLY AFFILIATED WITH BROWN UNIVERSITY.
Brown University is an Ivy League institution with a distinctive undergraduate academic program, a world-class faculty, outstanding graduate and medical students, and a tradition of innovative and rigorous multidisciplinary study. A commitment to diversity and intellectual freedom has remained a hallmark of the University since its establishment.
Brown students are distinguished by their academic excellence, self-direction and collaborative style of learning. Brown faculty are deeply committed to teaching, preeminent in their fields, and leaders in advancing knowledge that has broad scholarly, theoretical and practical applications.
The University's mission is "to serve the community, the nation, and the world by educating and preparing students to discharge the offices of life with usefulness and reputation, through a partnership of students and teachers in a unified community known as a university-college."
Founded in 1764, Brown University was the third college in New England and the seventh in America -- and the only one that welcomed students of all religious persuasions. Today, the main campus covers nearly 140 acres, all of it within a 10-minute walk of its hub, the College Green. The University is situated on a historic residential hill overlooking downtown Providence, a city of some 170,000 people.
Brown has launched an exciting program of initiatives for academic enrichment that will enlarge the University's faculty by 100 members, improve support for graduate students, and invest in libraries, information technology and academic space.
As part of this program, the University has instituted a need-blind undergraduate admission process to ensure all worthy applicants access to the University, regardless of ability to pay.
