I AM NEAR, THE SUCCESSOR OF L















Near (Leader of SPK)
I, Near, was a primary candidate to become L's successor and calls myself "N" during the course of my investigations. I shares a number of similarities with L. Much like how L plays with things such as sugar cubes and forks, I frequently shown playing with toys or my hair. I also sits in an unusual manner similar to L, but with some slight differences. I offered to join forces with Mello to fight Kira, but Mello turned me down. I then gained the support of the Government of the United States and formed the Special Provision for Kira (SPK).


THE RELATIONSHIP/RIVALRY BETWEEN ME AND MELLO

The relationship between me and Mello is a very special one. First of all, both Mello and I were orphans at Wammy's House. That particular orphanage gauged the children there to become possible successors for L. I was always the "better" one supposedly. While Mello was close behind. However, when L died, unannouncing his successor, it was suggested that me and Mello were both take over. Mello, angry about this, left the house as I stayed for another couple years and I appeared again to challenge Kira by heading the SPK. Hence, from the beginning you can see our close relationship as well as rivalry to one another.
Soon afterwards, Mello and I were pitted against each other with the Death Note. Mello and I share such a close bond that we can easily tell each others' actions. Even when I did not know about Mello kidnappings in order to obtain the Death Note, I show obvious signs of knowing. I knew that he loved chocolates and even later on, could tell what I could do, as Mello could tell about me. But, we cannot stand alone and need each other to survive and have a purpose.
As for the rivalry, I think that is pretty obvious. We are both trying to catch Kira and also succeed in doing what L failed in doing. We are racing towards the same goal. Sacrifices are needed in order to accomplish your GOAL!
