DUMAGUETE PROFILE
known as the European city of the South and the City of Gentle People. Dumaguete became a city on November 24, 1948. Myth has is that Dumaguete was taken from the word DAGIT meaning "to snatch" as the early settlement was a constant target of pirates. Dumaguete has lured and captivated many racial stains since the olden times. The city's annual "Sandurot sa Malumong Dumaguitnon" every November reenacts the rites of welcome for these migrations that have enriched the cultural character of the city. The pageantry begins at the beachfront of the scenic Rizal Avenue, a boulevard along the shore shaded by ancient trees and lined with some of the finer residences of Dumaguete, including three mansions where past governnors of the province lived.
GEOGRAPHY
Dumaguete City is located on the southeastern part of Negros Island in the Central Visayas region. The city is bounded by the Mindanao Sea on the east, and the municipalities of Sibulan on the north, Bacong on the south and Valencia on the west. The city has a land area of 3,426 hectares and a coastal area of approximately 12,000 hectares. There are thirty (30) barangays in the city. Roads stretch a total of 79.71 km, with 11.91 km identified as national road, 42 km as city road and 25.80 km barangay road.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC
The city is known as a university town due to the presence of reputable institutions of higher learning – Silliman University (founded in 1901), St. Paul’s University (founded in 1904), Foundation University, and Negros Oriental State University. These universities and colleges provide the engine of economic growth in the city. Aside from being the administrative capital of the province, the city is also the regional business center. Its main product is knowledge and skilled human resources. The opening of medical transcription, call center and publishing in Dumaguete and the metro area has been the basis of the rapid growth of the IT industry and business process outsourcing investments in the city.
Dumaguete City is the hub of Negros Oriental province commerce. The province is into agricultural production with sugar, rice, corn, copra, fruits, vegetables, abaca and tobacco as main crops. The city’s marine products include fish, mussels and other seafood products from the different towns. Other sources of livelihood include pottery, brick-making, cottage industries, footwear, textiles, furniture and fruit preserves.
DELICACIES
City folks enjoy the Painitan Area of the Public Market where Tsokolate, Puto and Budbud Cabug are of the main interest to fill your gastronomic desires for native delicacies. Chicharon in Dumaguete is a sensation. Biscocho may not be endemic in the city, but it certainly is a delicious treat for visitors and Dumagueteños alike. Other delicacies not to be missed are the Lumpiang Ubod, Bokayo, Banana Chips and the famous Sans Rival and Silvanas.
CLIMATE
The city has two seasons, namely: the dry and wet seasons. The wet season covers the period from June to November, and the dry season starts from December to May, the hottest being April and May.
