What I enjoy doing:
amateur-ity (in the sense of as opposed to professionalism), 1924, gay divorce, banter, audio, the hot tub at doe bay, trombone, fighting the power. also extremely: the history of illegal CIA actions, especially in 1953 in Iran.
-
Favorite Books:
this blinding absence of light, persepolis, the shadow lines (really anything by amitav ghosh), and--oh, i have a book-reading addiction that i can't freaking kick. come over, i'll show you. ok and also my two most fave recent reads: ali liebegott's the ihop papers and michael wex's schlepping the exile.
-
Favorite Movies:
have you seen "captain pantoja and the special forces"? its good.
-
Favorite Music:
oh, i like aterciopelados, asha bhosle, mos def, sun ra and his arkestra, gogol bordello, public enemy, shoplifting, natacha atlas. and how can you not love Punjabi MC or the RMO? etc etc etc.
-
Favorite TV Shows:
i don't have tv anymore. but if i did, i'd be watching the mexico vs iran world cup game right now. not because i'm a sports fan. because just because americans don't care about something doesn't mean its not important.

About Me:
i believe in ambivalence. also decisiveness. also multilateral solutions. also the estate tax. also music. also no war no war no war. i'm interested in how history feels. and busy trying to figure out what that means.
in other news: i am amazed by the beauty and strength and searing wit of the people i get to call my friends. i have so many unfreakingbelievable friends. and i am tender-- v. v. tender-- inside for them. this helps me battle the chronic, global hopelessness that i have inherited from my war-weary, mass-migrating, politically confused ancestors.
last night i heard an urdu poem read that contained the lines "oh my love is so inept at this business of looting" and i think that's a good description.

Who I Want to Meet:
artists into collectivity, editors with politics, radical creative visionaries, someone who can help me figure out my mbox glitches.

a few years later, after i moved to new york, i finally got to see his work. and it was witty and incisive and beautiful and deeply, deeply human, and it was like coming home and seeing something fresh all at once. it reminded me about imagination and also about experimentation and showing things as they are while not necessarily being literal. it made me inspired to make more dances and felt a little like something i had seen before and knew very comfortably in my bones.
rachel mattson inspires the same sort of excitement. being her friend is good for my viscera.
It's true, both sex symbol and nerdy buddy, Rachel walks a fine line while doling out sharp advice, black tea, and an everlasting endurance for making art happen.
Rachel is the best kind of puppy I know. Up with puppies.
end bad pun here.
