when i was in college, i did a paper on bill t. jones, the choreographer. i read his writing and watched his dances and was so incredibly excited. this was a mind that felt good to spend time with (via his autobiography) and a person who was making good and ethical work.

a few years later, after i moved to new york, i finally got to see his work. and it was witty and incisive and beautiful and deeply, deeply human, and it was like coming home and seeing something fresh all at once. it reminded me about imagination and also about experimentation and showing things as they are while not necessarily being literal. it made me inspired to make more dances and felt a little like something i had seen before and knew very comfortably in my bones.

rachel mattson inspires the same sort of excitement. being her friend is good for my viscera.

When I first saw Rachel, she was wearing giant pink dress on stage and I was sure that she was a cult leader. I actually haven't come close enough to prove that theory wrong but I hope to. I don't think she's the kool-aid kind. I think she's the kind that helps people with their style.

i feel highly grateful that after years of dancing around the edges of the venn diagram of our collective social circles, rachel has suddenly cha-chaed into my life in a giant maelstrom of excellence. it's like a new year's evolution.
