Shutter Shades

Shutter Shades are a design of fashion sunglasses created and first made available in the summer of 2007 by Shutter Shades, Inc., headquartered in Los Angeles, California. However similar designs of slatted sunglasses were commercially available earlier, at least since the 1980s. Instead of having lenses, the design is characterized by its "shutter" motif, which is part of the frame, and are marketed as suitable for both men and women.[1] During the 1980's, a similar style of the shades were available, nicknamed "Venetian Blinders." They were featured in the music videos for "Glittering Prize" by Simple Minds in 1982 and "Obsession" by Animotion in 1984. The current Shutter Shades design was directly inspired by an Alain Mikli custom design for Kanye West[2] and also influenced by the fashion of the 1980s. West popularized the glasses in the music video for his hit song "Stronger."[3] Over the remainder of the year and the next, several celebrities publicly embraced the style of the shades, quickly establishing Shutter Shades as a pop culture staple.[4]

Depending on the design, Shutter Shades may not function as sunglasses; although some models contain UV resistant lenses, many do not, and only feature a series of horizontal plastic "shades," which neither provide protection for the eye from UV light nor prevent a substantial amount of light from entering the eye, rendering them a functionless accessory.

The shades are available in an assortment of styles and colors. Shutter Shades, Inc. initially launched the classic style in white, black, red, blue, green, pink, yellow, orange, purple and sky blue colors. In early 2008, they released the clear and glow-in-the-dark designs. Gold and silver sets were set to be released by the company in limited quantities in the spring of 2009.

In 2008 the company developed and released a more functional version of Shutter Shades sunglasses called the 2.0 edition, which featured fewer shutters at the top of the frame and had actual lenses. [1] Since its launch, Shutter Shades Inc. has expanded into apparel and other accessories. Todd Wilkerson, the founder and President of Shutter Shades Inc., was quoted as saying, "Shutter Shades will go down in history as the most unique and possibly the most popular style of eyewear ever."
