no franchise has been and probably will be as popular as la tondeAAa's.the team has so enamored the masses that through thick and thin,in good and bad times,its multitude of fans have remained steadfastly loyal.wether the club is on a slump or a winning streak,the fans cheers themselves hoarse just the same.
La tondeAAa broke into the PBA in 1979.At that time,the spirits company was controlled by the palanca family.Today,it is controlled by the san miguel group.In fact,andres soriano III is the common chairman of both san miguel and la tondeAAa.Through the years,the franchise has used several brand names to identify its team starting with the gilbey's gin tonics,then st.george whiskey,ginebra san miguel,aAAejo rhum65,tondeAAa65rhum, gordon's gin boars, and finally brgy.ginebra kings.Ginebra was easily the most identifiable tag.Maybe because it is also la tondeAAa's most sealable drink.The franchise was also known as ginebra the longest and won 2 of its four titles using the brand.Ginebra took the 3rd conference crown on 1986 and the first conference title in 1991.aAAejo rhum 65 captured the all-filipino diadem in 1988.and gordon's gin bagged the commissioner's cup plum in 1997.the la tondeAAAAa story began in 1979 when team owner carlos palanca,jr. and his son honeyboy decided to join the PBA as its 9th franchise.Pilo Pumaren was the pioneer coach and his star player was willy tanduyan.ernie de leon,the PBA referee,was also in the 1st line up.the team's debut conference was a disaster as gilbey's gin posted a forgettable 1-15 record in the all-filipino.in 1980,pumaren was replace4d by nemie villegas.2 yrs later,it was arturo valenzona's turn to call the shots.when toyota disbanded in 1984,the franchise inherited jaworski and francis arnaiz frm the defunct club.the nxt season,the big j took over as head coach and hired rino salazar as chief assistant."e;NEVER-SAY-DIE WAS A PHILOSOPHY THAT BECAME LA TONDEAAAAAS TRADEMARK
