Edward Cullen
He's 17, but he's been 17 for the last 90-odd years. Turned into a vampire by the humane Carlisle while dying during the Spanish Influenza epidemic in 1918, Edward hunts animals rather than humans for food and lives peaceably with his adoptive family. He's also able to read people's minds. Despite his attraction to Bella - based initially on the fact that she alone appears immune to his mind-reading ability - Edward finds her blood almost impossible to resist, making it difficult for him to be around her and causing him to push her away on a regular basis. He has - in the best vampire tradition - a tendency to brood, muse on the existence (or not) of his immortal soul and generally hate himself.

Bella Swan
Following the divorce of her parents, Bella grew up with her mother Renee in sunny Phoenix, Arizona, where she was the responsible one for her flighty parent. When Renee remarries, to a professional baseball player called Phil, Bella self-sacrificingly volunteers to move in with her father Charlie, to allow her mother the freedom to travel with Phil around the circuit. That's how Bella arrives in the rainy town of Forks, Washington. There, she begins to make friends with the local teens, but becomes fascinated with Edward Cullen, a mysterious boy in school who seems to dislike her intensely. Bella has a tendency to doubt herself, criticise herself and generally mope, making her occasionally annoying but rather realistic.
