special K, as we call her at the home,
was her kindness. When I met her I was
face down in the gutter trying not to
drown in my own gut juice. Her friends
took turns kicking me and and slapping
me in the face with my own hand, and
then asking the ridiculous
question "why are you hitting yourself?"
Just when I was about to go down for
the count K said that they should just
forget about me cause I didn't have any
money anyway. The beating stopped.
Later that evening she returned with a
pile of gas soaked rags and a zippo.
She wiped the crust from the corners of
my mouth and asked if I was in to "acts
of random arson" I said that I had
never thought about it, But something
in her crazy eyes told me to trust her.
She promised a high much better than
huffing glue or self asphyxiation, and
by God that's just what our friendship
has been, better'n a cheap high. Thank
you special K.
you sat next to in Social Studies, but
could never work up the courage to ask
out because she was so cool, and you
were such a geek, and you were
absolutely SURE that there was no
possible way that you could be into the
same things, so you tried for a while to
like different things, the things you
figured she would probably like--New
Kids on the Block, the cool clothes, all
that stuff--but you still never quite
got up the courage to talk to her 'cause
you were never all that comfortable with
your "new self," so you went back to
pining quietly in the corner until one
day, during homeroom, she came up to you
while you were reading "Lord of the
Rings" and started talking to you, and
you realized that you weren't such a
geek after all, and that she was cool,
but not that uber-hip type of cool that
thinks everyone who doesn't listen to
the band Recalibrated Noggin or whatever
is a total lame-o, just cool-cool, and
you got to be really good friends with
her because you could talk to her about
pretty much everything, and listen to
records together, and just pretty much
hang out a lot and just hanging out with
her made you feel better about your own
coolness-quotient?
confidante. She lets me stack my dishes in
the sink for months at a time, she lets me
borrow her CD's even though I put them
back in all the wrong cases, she lets my cat
live with us even though he's destructive
and sometimes touches her cats in
inappropriate ways. She's the best internet
connection I've ever made. Rock on
GOFFP.
photocopy machine, and I heard someone
in the next office talking about the
previous evening's episode of Buffy.
That's when I knew how smart and cool
Kristen was.
in contrasts - she is really fun, yet
she is always napping.
