Jennifer Aniston was born in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, California, and grew up in New York City. She is the daughter of the actor John Aniston and actress Nancy Dow.Aniston's father is a Greek American, born Yannis Anastassakis, on the island of Crete, Greece, while her mother was born in New York City of British descent. Aniston has two half-brothers, John Melick (older) and Alex Aniston (younger). Aniston's godfather was the actor Telly Savalas, her father's best friend. She lived in Greece for one year as a child with her family, and they later relocated to New York City. Her father has appeared in the soap operas Days of our Lives, Love of Life and Search for Tomorrow. Jennifer has a painting painted when she was just eleven years old displayed in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art .Aniston attended the New York Rudolf Steiner School and graduated from Manhattan's Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. She worked in Off Broadway productions such as For Dear Life and Dancing on Checker's Grave.

She supported herself with several part-time jobs, including working as a telemarketer and bike messenger.Looking for more of a challenge, Aniston moved west.During 1989, Aniston was cast in a handful of television shows. In 1993, Aniston won a part in Leprechaun. In those years, Aniston made a name for herself as an actress who would take risks and graciously accept criticism of herself and her work.Then, a pilot of a show called Friends came along.Aniston was originally tested for the role of Monica, but she told the producers that she felt much more comfortable with the Rachel character and they agreed.Although Jennifer has lived in Greece,she does not fancy Greek food.

Aniston instantly charmed audiences with her perfect looks and endearingly flawed persona and during the sitcom's 10-year run she won an Emmy and a Golden Globe and became a hairstyle icon . In the mid-'90s, Aniston began to appear in films while on hiatus from the small screen. Though she proved her dramatic chops as a frustrated wife who has an affair with a teen in the indie The Good Girl, she was usually called upon to play a variation of her neurotic and adorable Friends' character (Picture Perfect, The Object of My Affection, Rumor Has It... ). In addition to acting, Aniston has also directed a hospital emergency room-set short film named Room 10, starring Robin Wright Penn and Kris Kristofferson. Aniston has noted that she was inspired to direct by actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who directed a short film in 2006.

Forbes listed Aniston as the 10th richest woman in the entertainment industry for the year 2007. She is behind such powerhouses as Oprah Winfrey, J. K. Rowling, Madonna, Celine Dion and Jennifer Lopez and is ahead of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and the Olsen twins.
