restaurant overlooking the Aurajoki
river valley, deep in the heart of
Finland. Over a bottle of port and some
hideously expensive cigars, we
discussed everything from Chinese
earthenware to the early work of Sir
Christopher Wren. Sharing laughter over
the idiosyncrasies of the English
language and tears over man's
inhumanity to man, the hours simply
flew by. Soon enough, our drivers
arrived to pick us up and we each went
our separate ways. Jackie to South West
Africa to rescue the last surving
members of a rare species of butterfly,
and I to Stratford for a spell at the
Royal Shakespeare Company. Jackie is a
fantastic friend, and one of this
world's great conversationalists.
