About Me:
First name: BrooklynCollege //// Last name: CUNY
**75 YEARS YOUNG IN 2005**
On May 15, 1930, the Board of Higher Education of the city of New York delivered and officially christened me as "Brooklyn College of the College of the City of New York," child of the Brooklyn branches of Hunter College (a women's college) and of the College of the City of New York (men only). My parents met four years earlier in 1926, when the Board authorized their establishments in Brooklyn. With their marriage and my subsequent birth in 1930, I became the first public coeducational liberal arts college in the city of New York. My first classes were held in the Willoughby Building on the corner of Willoughby and Bridge streets in downtown Brooklyn. Mayor Jimmy Walker appointed Dr. William A. Boylan as my first president. Today, as my eighth president, Dr. Christopher M. Kimmich continues to nurture my growth, directing expansive renovation projects and numerous technological and educational improvements.
My current, cherished home came into being on October 2, 1935, when Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia used a silver-plated shovel to break ground for what is my campus today in the Midwood section of Brooklyn: twenty-six acres of broad lawns bounded by handsome Georgian-styled buildings. Since then, I have distinguished myself as one of the nation's leading public institutions of higher education. I am home to Professors Tania Leon, Michael Cunningham, Edwin G. Burrows, Ken Miyano, and Yaffa Eliach. I encourage involvement in community and public service and maintain a campus environment hospitable to multicultural interests and activities. As an urban institution, I draw upon the myriad resources of the city to enrich my educational offerings.
