Death Note (デスノート, Desu Nōto?) is a Japanese manga series created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata. The series centers on Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook, the titular "Death Note", dropped on Earth by a shinigami (death god) named Ryuk. The Death Note grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose face they have seen, by writing the victim's name in the notebook. The story follows Light's attempt to create and rule a world cleansed of evil using the notebook, and the complex conflict between him and his opponents.
Light Yagami is the protagonist of Death Note. He is an extremely intelligent but bored 17-year old student. When he finds the Death Note dropped by Ryuk(a god of death),he decided to use it to kill criminals and earns the title Kira. His ultimate goal is to cleanse the world from evil to create a utopia and then reign over this new world as its God.
L Lawliet is the greatest detective of the world tasked with tracking down and arresting Kira. As such,he is Light's arch enemy. His dishelved apperance masks his great powers of deduction and insight. L has many quirks such as biting his thumb, sitting in an odd manner, holdin things in a very peculiar manner.
Misa Amane is the female protagonist of the anime Death Note.She is a famous model,singer,actress and has an immense crush with Light Yagami.She usually refers to herself as the third person by calling herself "misa-misa" to be cute and tends to be hyperactive.
Near,whose real name is Nate River is the younger of L's two successors raised in the Watari's Orphanage for gifted children.Much like L, Near shows various odd behaviors during his normal life.He is usually hunched over than sitting,and he also plays various toys which he uses in his theories.
Mello,real name Mihael Keehl is the older of L's two successor raised at watari's orphanage for the gifted children on Winchester,England.Similar to L's fondness for sweets,Mello is often seen eating bars of chocolates.Mello has a brazen and driven personality,driving him(and not Near )to be the first to resume actively hunting Kira;however, Mello lets his emotions cloud his judgements, often leading to rash decisions that impede his progress.
Mikami Teru is originally chosen to be the new Kira by Light Yagami.When Light feels it is dangerous for Misa Amane to keep the Death Note any longer,he instructs her to pass the ownership of the note to Mikami.Little is known about Mikami at first,except that he appears to be a supporter of Kira,and that he is a prosecutor.
Ryuk is the main shinigami of the series Death Note.Ryuk was so bored with the activities in the Shinigami realm,so he decides to obtain a second Death Note and drop it in the human world for someone to find,hoping to amuse himself.He deliberately writes the instructions inside the front cover (in English which he assumes the most popular language in the human world) so people would understand it's purpose.Ryuk has a great fondness of apples stating the addiction to be like cigarettes and alcohol for humans and suffers certain symptoms of withdrawal.
Rem is the shinigami who gives a Death Note to Misa. Like Ryuk, Rem also owns two Death Notes; however Rem did not get hers thru trickery. The shinigami Gelus, who had fallen in love with Misa, sacrificed himself to kill her destined murderer. In doing so, he turned into dust leaving his Death Note.Touched by his act, Rem delivered his Death Note to Misa.
