About Me:
Shaira Gonzales, a second year BS Management student, traveled all the way from Cavite to show the rest of the crowd of what she got. She now dons the green and gold jersey and came close to fame last season 70 of the University Athletics’ Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
“Last season marks my first year in the competition and I’m looking forward more fruitful years to come,” says Gonzales.
Gonzales made her first UAAP appearance last season and she immediately bagged two championships.
From smashing to spiking
Gonzales used to play badminton during her primary years. At 14 she started to play volleyball. Two games that use almost the same skill, the only difference is the number of players in each event and the equipments used.
Badminton is played alone in singles and by pair in doubles it utilizes the use of shuttle **** and racket. Volleyball, on the other hand, is played by a group which consists of six members.
“Nahiligan ko ang volleyball nung high school kasi nga madami akong kasama sa paglalaro, sa badminton mag-isa lang ako,” says the athlete.
Gonzales already claimed a number of titles under her collar. In 2005, she was awarded as the best attacker in Milo summer league. While in 2006, Gonzales received the title as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) three times in a row and Palarong Pambansa Indoor Volleyball Player of the same year.
In 2007, Gonzales claimed the title as the Rookie of the Year in Beach Volleyball. She shared the title as Uni Games Beach Volleyball champion together with former team captain Wendy Ann Semana. Just recently they claimed the title as Indoor champion in the 70th season of the UAAP.
“Pursigido kasi ako, pag may gusto akong laro todo praktis ako kahit sa loob ng bahay nagsasanay ako,” reveals Gonzales on why she keeps winning.
Donning the Green and Gold Jersey
This 5’7 athlete was spotted and recruited by Coach Joseph Santos in the Palarong Pambansa to play for the green and gold community. “Nakita ko kung paano siya maglaro, at nagustuhan ko kung paano siya gumalaw sa loob ng court,” says Coach Joseph Santos.
“Tinanong ako ni Coach Santos kung gusto ko daw maglaro para sa FEU, pumayag ako kasi yung ibang team mates ko ‘nung high school member na ng volleyball team dito,” says Gonzales when asked about how she was recruited.
That started her rampage as a lady tamaraw.
Growing with the team
The desire to meet a lot of people and to improve her skills keeps this Caviteña motivated in her games.
“Marami akong taong nakikilala sa larong ito, iyon yung motivation ko sa paglalaro,” says Gonzales
Gonzales trains with the rest of the team for three hours five days a week, the training includes agility enhancement, service, blocking over all team play and spiking.
During training Gonzales give her hundred percent in order to improve herself. She focuses more on spiking and receives, since those skills according to her needs improvement.
“Gusto ko uling mag champion kaya binibigay ko ang lahat sa training,” says Gonzales
“Minsan pag hindi makapalo utakan lang dapat,” adds Gonzales.
With four more playing years in the league Gonzales is expecting to garner another championship. With the skill and sheer determination that she has, Gonzales is a real rookie to watch for.
