Friendster Is The #1 Social Network for Adults and Youth In Malaysia

Industry Data Shows Friendster’s Leadership Position Across All Age Groups in Malaysia

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA and KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – October 21, 2008 – Friendster, Inc., a top-20 global website based on traffic and the #1 social network in Asia, today announced that it has more unique visitors in Malaysia than any other social network in each and every age group – including all of the adult age groups.* Friendster is 2.5 times larger than Facebook and 3.5 times larger than MySpace in Malaysia – according to the third-party well-known Internet measurement company comScore. Friendster had 3,623,000 unique visitors in August 2008, compared to Facebook at 1,447,000 and MySpace at 1,003,000.*

Friendster has more unique visitors than any other major social network in Malaysia in each and every age group from age 15 to 54, and Friendster leads in all three adult/professional age groups, 24-34, 35-44 and 45-54.

Specifically with adults:

  • For users 25-34 years old, Friendster is 1.7 times larger than Facebook and 3.9 times larger than MySpace. Friendster has 872,000 unique visitors while Facebook has 502,000 and MySpace has 223,000.
  • For users 35-44 years old, Friendster is 2 times larger than Facebook and 3.2 times larger than MySpace. Friendster has 411,000 unique visitors while Facebook has 209,000 and MySpace has 129,000.
  • For users 45-54 years old, Friendster is 1.8 times larger than Facebook and over 4 times larger than MySpace. Friendster has 162,000 unique visitors while Facebook has 90,000 and MySpace has 40,000.

Specifically with youth:

  • For users 15-24 years old, Friendster is 3.5 times larger than Facebook and over 3.7 times larger than MySpace. Friendster has 1,990,000 unique visitors while Facebook has 573,000 and MySpace has 536,000.

With 1,445,000 unique visitors in the combined 25-54 adult age range in Malaysia, Friendster is 1.8 times larger than Facebook and over 3.6 times larger than MySpace, which is great news for brands, advertisers and marketers looking to reach this attractive and large demographic segment.

“This comScore data clearly demonstrates our lead in adult and professional age groups in Malaysia, in addition to all age groups,” said Jeff Roberto, director of marketing and PR at Friendster. “Our internal data shows even larger numbers for Friendster in Malaysia across all age groups, as comScore data does not include traffic coming from Internet cafes and mobile devices. Since both are common ways for users in Malaysia to access Friendster, we’ve recently launched a new mobile site m.friendster.com and a new text alerts feature to address the demand for mobile social networking in Malaysia,” Roberto said.

August 2008 metrics from comScore also reveal that Friendster has relatively low overlap with other social networks in Malaysia. Users of Friendster generally did not visit other social networks. For example, only 27% of Friendster users visited Facebook and only 19% visited MySpace in May. This is not the case for other social networks, where 68% of Facebook users and 69% of MySpace users visited Friendster in August.*

“Numbers like these are incredible and demonstrate that Friendster is a highly effective destination for advertisers to maximize their online marketing campaigns,” said Simon Bond, regional managing director, Proximity Asia/BBDO. In my opinion, the bulk of online advertising budgets should be going to sites where users are spending excessive amounts of their time, which today, are social media sites. Given Friendster’s leadership position in reach in Malaysia, it’s a great buy for advertisers looking to reach both the adult and youth age groups online,” said Bond. “Advertisers simply cannot get these numbers on any other social network in Malaysia,” he said.

Friendster Leads in Malaysia
Friendster is the #1 social network in Malaysia and is 2.5 times larger than the next largest social network in Malaysia.* Friendster has more monthly unique visitors in Malaysia than any other major social network, and more monthly unique visitors in every age range, specifically 15-24, 25-34, 35-44 and 45-54 years old.* With over 5 million registered users in Malaysia, over 33% of Malaysia’s Internet users have a Friendster account. A typical user spends 30 minutes a day on Friendster and visits Friendster several times a week, communicating with friends and sharing and consuming content through a suite of features.

Friendster Leads in Asia and Is a Top 10 Global Website
Friendster is the #1 social network in Asia,* with over 62 million registered users and over 45 million monthly unique visitors from Asia.** Asia is the largest market of Internet users (Asia has 38% of the world’s Internet users while the U.S. is only 22%), and Asia is the fastest growing region in the world. Friendster has a loyal and growing user base throughout Asia in the following top 10 Asia Pacific countries for Friendster: Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and South Korea.

Friendster is a top 20 global website and the 3rd largest social network in the world in terms of traffic, serving 19 billion page views a month. Friendster is 1st in “user engagement” among the top five global social networks with an average of 185 minutes per visitor per month.*
