      More About Limasawa

      • About Me:

Limasawa Island was the site of the celebration of the first Christian mass in the Orient, following the discovery of the Philippines by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. A historical and cultural viewing of the Magellan Shrine/Marker is available. The final proclamation of it as the real site of the First Christian Mass in the Philippines, as ascertained by the Gancayco Commission, placed Southern Leyte in the annals of history as the seat of Christianity in the Far East

There is a lot of things to do in Limasawa: caving, snorkeling, scuba diving, whale shark watching (or for the more adventurous, swimming with these gentle giants) hiking, biking to name a few. It also boasts of pristine white, black, or pebbled beaches scattered around it and of course, a bat sanctuary! One can also visit the coastal springs on the northern part of this very beautiful island.

Limasawa Island as a divers paradise boasts of magnificent walls and sheer drop-offs decorated with a variety of lovely fan corals that never fail to awe even the most traveled and experienced diver. The best time to visit the island is from March to early June and from October to December. Trips can be arranged through the Southern Leyte Governors Office; passenger outrigger boats are also available at the Padre Burgos wharf.

        Sinugdan Festival
Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese navigator in the service of Spain, landed in Limasawa Island on March 31, 1521. Here, the first Christian mass in the Orient was celebrated on Easter Sunday. The historic and religious event is commemorated every March 31st in Limasawa with a cultural presentation and anniversary program dubbed as Sinugdan, meaning beginning.

        Barangays

Limasawa is politically subdivided into 6 barangays.

      • hi!

my sister and i went to this island sometime in 2005. We know no one from the place. We just go there to find our roots. they said that the palero's are originally from the place. We we're able to meet the folks from one barangay to another. The waves were sooo huge... but the place is very quiet and very very nice.

despite the waves, i still want to go back to the place but this time i will be taking the roro ship so that if will be an enjoyable ride... see you again limasawa!!

      • It's time we rectify the Limasawa first mass error which, accdg. to the foremost expert on the subject, has been turned into a hoax by the National Historical Institute. Here's the expert view on the subject, click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_mass_in_the_Phi lippines and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:First_mass_in_th e_Philippines
