About Me:
Blah blah blah. I was born in Germany, but raised in the USA. (My parents aren't German, just in case you're wondering. My father was in the military and stationed in Stuttgart at the time.) Various years passed. We moved around a lot. I went to college, starting at UCSC but finishing at Reed, where I got a degree in linguistics, and then went to grad school in Australia, where I got another degree. Two degrees seemed like too many at that point, and I was getting more interested in computers, so I moved to San Francisco and
joined the dotcom bubble as a programmer. The bubble burst, as most sensible people predicted, and I got tired of programming professionally. Fortunately, an opportunity presented itself for me to take up a PhD fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, The Netherlands (aka, Holland). So now I'm here working on describing
a Papuan language spoken in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, which is
famous for having the world's smallest phonemic inventory: only 5 vowels and 6 consonants! Supposedly, it's in the Guinness Book of World Records!

I always think of Stu. That's the only
movie with a linguist as the lead hero
character! And he is so cool too!
Stuart is like a brand new computer.
Slightly burnt plasticy smell, nice
shiny new keyboard, a mouse that you can
really wrap your hand around and that
moves smoothly, and best of all: Mozilla
fires up really fast. This boy is wicked
smaht.
computer or human. Java, Tzotzil,
Mixtec, whatever - Stu knows them
all. He corrects English grammar
lapses without mercy, but is fabulous
enough to get away with it.
