She maybe Canadian but Riza is pure pinay, her parents hailing from Bulacan and Bataan. Both engineers, her parents’ jobs took them to Canada as immigrants. And although she has lived in North America all her life, Riza is raised with Filipino values and has very close family ties. She admits though to breaking the rules and sneaking out to party with the popular kids one night when she was 16. She returned home to find her sister enraged for her parents were still out looking for her. Riza then vowed never to do it again.
Riza began concentrating on charity work and community service. She even joined the military as a medic. She’s also a counselor at a crisis center for pregnant women and has vowed to save her self for the man she loves on her wedding day. Riza even wears a ring on her engagement finger to seal this promise.
Riza, like most of her family, is an achiever. Aside from her military career and vocations, she studied Biology in college. Quite talented, she has also designed some of the gowns she has worn on pageants. Riza dreams of having a singing and acting career someday too.

You represented Canada in last year’s Miss Earth pageant. How was the experience?
~I represented Alberta and then they sent me to Montreal to compete for the national title and I ended up winning Ms. Earth Canada. So they sent me to the Philippines last November to represent Canada. I was very fortunate to make a lot of new friends. I won a few titles—Ms. Photogenic, first runner-up for Miss Talent and three of the four sponsored awards.
If you noticed, we asked a very vague question on the Miss Earth tilt. Having said that, are you suspicious of men who spout beauty pageant trivia like they were sports stats?
~I’m not. See, I have a brother who’s so into sports but he knows a lot of beauty pageant trivia because of me. I tell my brother these facts and he can spout them out.
Would it be of any use to us sweeping women off their feet if we did?
~I guess it may be beneficial somehow in the future…I’m not really sure how, ha ha ha!
Do you have to be a sort of environmentalist to join Ms. Earth?
~Ideally you should have a passion for the environment if you’re going to join the Ms. Earth pageant. It comes with the territory. For me, I’m the president of the Coastal Protection Foundation, I partnered with the Philippine Tourism Authority and we’re trying to promote eco-tourism, environmental responsibility, and poverty reduction. We have different projects being implemented right now; we just finished the World Caravan, promoting Philippine tourism abroad and Canada.
