Tommy Winata, 44, is a well-known but controversial businessman who has close business ties with the Indonesian army, or Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI), as well as private businessmen and their conglomerates under former President Suharto.
Tommys involvement with the military started in 1972 in West Kalimantan, when he obtained the tender to build an officers mess in Singkawang. Although it was a small deal, he gained recognition and later came under the wing of General Tiopan Bernard Silalahi, who was then the Secretary General of the Department of Natural Resources and Energy and also the Minister of Labour Relations. Under his military benefactor, Tommy received lucrative contracts to help construct several military facilities in Irian Jaya (West Papua), Ambon and even Ujung Pandang (Makassar).
Tommy then started a business conglomerate called the Artha Graha Group. Besides general trading, it has diversified interests in property development, logging and plywood plants, real-estate development, information technology, banking and finance. Artha Graha has more than 40 registered businesses and several dozen affiliated companies under its umbrella.
Tommy was also running a foundation called Yayasan Kartika Eka Paksi, a retirement welfare fund for members of the Armed Forces, and was given the militarys mandate to invest in sound businesses and projects for a return on profits.
Recently, Bank Artha Graha made headlines for its involvement in the unlawful detention in Jakarta of two senior Indian executives from Polaris Software Lab Ltd, over a commercial dispute between the bank and the company. The Indian government had to intervene to secure the release of the executives.
In another incident, the editor and editor-in-chief of local magazine Tempo were physically attacked by thugs believed to have been sent from Artha Graha. The attack was apparently provoked by an article saying that Artha Graha stood to gain from a fire that burned down a building(P
